The Growing Together initiative in Busokelo is empowering farmers with sustainable rice farming practices, improving productivity, reducing costs, and promoting environmental conservation through agroecological approaches.
Building on this foundation, agricultural experts have been working closely with farmers and local leaders in Kisegesa Ward to implement practical solutions that address key farming challenges. These include high production costs, low yields, and declining soil fertility, all of which directly affect farmer income and food security.
One of the main priorities of the initiative is to increase the value of rice production. Farmers are being trained to produce high-quality paddy that meets both local and international market standards. By adopting improved farming techniques and better crop management practices, they are able to achieve more consistent and marketable harvests.
At the same time, the program focuses on reducing production costs through the use of efficient and high-performance agricultural inputs. This approach enables farmers to maximize output while minimizing unnecessary expenses, ultimately improving profitability.
To further enhance productivity, farmers are guided on modern agronomic practices such as proper land preparation, correct spacing, water management, and effective crop care. These practices help increase yields while ensuring sustainability in the long term.
Improving soil health is another critical component of the initiative. Farmers are encouraged to return crop residues back to their fields, a practice that improves soil structure, increases organic matter, and enhances long-term fertility. This contributes to more resilient and productive farming systems.
In addition, the initiative promotes agroecological farming practices that strengthen natural ecosystems. The use of beneficial microorganisms and biodiversity-based approaches helps improve soil fertility, protect crops from pests through biological control, and maintain ecological balance.
Special attention is also given to the safe preparation and use of animal manure. Farmers are trained on proper composting techniques to ensure manure is free from harmful pathogens before being applied to the soil. This reduces the risk of disease transmission and supports safe, sustainable agriculture.
The program is supported by Sosoma Zacharia Manyinya, an Agricultural Engineer from the Busokelo District Council, who plays a key role in delivering technical guidance and promoting environmentally friendly farming practices, including the use of organic inputs.

Through these combined efforts, the Growing Together initiative continues to strengthen farmer capacity, improve productivity, and promote sustainable agriculture that benefits both communities and the environment.
